Classroom Emotions!!!!!!!!!!!

AT THE BEGINNING OF THE PROGRAM WE HAD THE DECISION TO RATE FROM 1-6 WHICH CLASSES WERE WE WERE MORE INTERESTED IN. MY FIRST CHOICE WAS PHILOSOPHY AND MY LAST WAS HISTORY. OF COURSE I KNEW I WOULD GET HISTORY BECAUSE IT WAS THE CLASS THAT I SDID NOT WANT. MY FIRST DAY IN CLASS WASN'T SO BAD BRCAUSE WE HAD A SUSTITUTE, BUT ACTUAL TEACHER I DIDN'T CLICK WITH. IM NOT GOING TO DISRESPECT THE HISTORY TEACHER, I JUST SEE IT AS AN EXPERIENCE I HAVE TO PREPARE MYSELF FOR WHEN I ATTEND COLLEGE. FOR FUTURE SUMMER SCHOLARS MAKE SURE YOU CROSS YOUR FINGERS FOR A HELPFUL TEACHER.

Career Shadowing

Monday June 30, 2008, the summer scholars listened to speakers and what we might be interested in when we attend college. There were many areas that we looked at such as study abroad, athletics and also student organizations. Women's UNO Basketball coach Patty Shearer caught my attention because of her live energy and creativity to get us pumped up. She told us about many jobs and volunteering opportunities that we could do within the basketball team with out actually playing. One of them were a marketing internship to learn how to promoted and advertise. Considering that marketing is a major thatI would like to pursue, the light bulb of opportunity flashed in my head. Hopefully with the correct networking I can make my way up to marketing outside of the college campus.
We also went to different locations to shadow individuals who worked in the field of our interest. I went to the Roskens HAll and was matched up with Mrs. Karen Smyth. She broke down the admissions process for us to be accepted to the College of Business and Administration and also the academic requirements that we would have to carry through the year. This was a good experince for me to create another network for myself and be able to have a direct person to contact whenI need valuable information.

Ciara's Experience

Ciara Lee
College 101

Spending one week in the Scott Residence Hall was a joyful and unforgettable experience. It allowed me to experience the living conditions I will face when attending a university. As the week went by, the more I didn’t want to leave. All of the students from various high schools created a comfortable environment for everyone not long after the Summer Scholars Program began. At the beginning I was a little hesitant conversing with the others, but the more we worked together during the course, the more we bonded.
Living in a dorm with three unfamiliar individuals was probably the biggest challenge I have had by far. I was already sure that I wouldn’t have any bad experiences with my roommates, but I was prepared just in case! Having to sleep with people you have never met is pretty challenging because everyone has different living conditions and your expectations of living might not be the same as theirs. The roommates I had were very polite and I became real good friends with one of them. If there came a time when I had to share dorms with them all over again I would not mind at all because they were very caring and made sure everyone was on time even though it was not their responsibility.
Waking up without my parents telling me to get up five times in a row was definitely a help to me. It motivated to become responsible for myself considering that I was by myself. Also I had to know how to manage my time such as when to do my homework and when to have free time. My peers also encouraged me to do my homework even when I didn’t want to. Being in the dorms for one week helped me to figure out how I would want to live when I attend college. Now that I have had the experience to be involved with the campus personally, I am comfortable with being on campus when I have to attend my classes. For any upcoming Summer Scholars’ participants I will gladly say that this was an experience of a lifetime.
